The practice was founded in 1966/67, with the initial setup a labour of love. The visual field screener, a crucial piece of optical equipment, was created and assembled by hand for the practice from lightbulbs and other pieces of equipment. John, a skilled local joiner from Harland and Wolff shipyard, contributed to the practice's infrastructure by creating partitions, reception furniture, waiting room seating, and even the essential binocular test charts and near binocular reading charts, which were unavailable commercially at the time.
