But for April Fool’s Day, we thought we’d let your eyes join in on the pranks!Have you ever looked at something and been certain of what you saw, only to realize your mind was totally making it up? It turns out, our eyes don't just "take a picture"—our brains actually "edit" what we see to help us make sense of the world. Sometimes, though, the brain gets a little too creative and falls for a glitch in the system.We’ve rounded up some of the most famous optical illusions to put your vision to the test.Warning: These might make you want to rub your eyes and check your prescription!<img src="https://admin.mackeyopticians.com/uploads/page_2_4292b0be15.jpeg" alt="page-2.jpeg" width="1880" height="1576"><h4>1. The Hermann Grid</h4>When you look at this grid, you’ll see grey "ghost" blobs appearing at the intersections of the white lines.<ul><li>The "Why": Your brain is trying to be too efficient. It’s tuned to notice sharp edges and corners. When it sees an intersection, it gets "overloaded" by all the white space around that one point and essentially turns down the brightness there to help you focus. Since it turns the brightness down too much, you see a grey smudge that isn't actually there!</li></ul><img src="https://admin.mackeyopticians.com/uploads/page_4_59fcf972a7.jpeg" alt="page-4.jpeg" width="1880" height="1576"><h4>2. Adelson’s Checker-Shadow</h4>In this image, square A looks dark grey and square B looks white. In reality, they are the exact same shade of grey.<ul><li>The "Why": Your brain is smarter than a light meter. It sees that square B is in a shadow, so it thinks, "Hey, if that square is in a shadow and still looks that bright, it must actually be a white square!" Your brain automatically "corrects" the image, so you see the material of the floor, not the actual light hitting your eye.</li></ul><img src="https://admin.mackeyopticians.com/uploads/page_1_75515ee64f.jpeg" alt="page-1.jpeg" width="1880" height="1576"><h4>3. The Duck-Rabbit</h4>This drawing can be seen as either a duck looking to the left or a rabbit looking to the right.<ul><li>The "Why": Your brain hate's confusion. It wants to give everything a label. However, it can’t hold two labels at the same time. It’s like a toggle switch—once you see the duck, your brain locks in. When you "find" the rabbit, it flips the switch. It’s a tug-of-war between two different parts of your memory.</li></ul><img src="https://admin.mackeyopticians.com/uploads/page_3_675888709a.jpeg" alt="page-3.jpeg" width="1880" height="1576"><h4>4. The Peripheral Drift</h4>If you look at this image and move your eyes around, the circles will start to spin or "crawl" like a video, even though it’s a completely still picture.<ul><li>The "Why": This is essentially a "lag" in your head. Your eyes process high-contrast colours (like black and white) faster than they process low-contrast colours (like the blue or yellow). These solutions are designed to clean, disinfect, and safely store your lenses. Be sure to empty your case and add fresh solution every time!</li></ul><h4>DO Wash Your Hands Before Handling Lenses</h4>Your hands are the biggest carrier of germs.<ul><li>Ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your lenses to insert or remove them.</li><li>DON'T: Use hand sanitiser at this stage, as it can dry out your lenses and irritate your eyes.</li></ul><h4>DON’T Share Contact Lenses with Anyone</h4>This is extremely dangerous!
