Mackey Opticians have recently taken over ownership of Ruth Robinson's Opticians in Donaghadee. Ruth initially trained with James Mackey for her pre-registration and worked in our practice then on Holywood Road, Belfast. Ruth then left to start her practice in Donaghadee in 1982 and has built up a very successful loyal patient base. We are very grateful that Ruth has had the confidence in Mackey Opticians to take over the practice and wish her the best in her well earned retirement.
Richard Mackey is now Principal Optometrist and Director at Mackey Opticians, moving from our Church Lane practice where he will still do a weekly clinic. He is supported by Optometrist Sophie Tougher and a very experienced team in Anne McCoy, Glynis Bane, Heather Kyle and Pamela Edwards, most of whom have strong links to the town.

Eye Examinations include our Advanced Eye Examination (with a 3D-OCT Retinal scan and Anterior eye imagery), Standard Eye Examination, Children's and Student Eye Examinations, and Contact Lens Assessments. You can also book appointments to choose or collect spectacles. Numbers are limited in our practices with Covid restrictions so appointments are important to control social distancing.

Richard Mackey has been interested in children's vision for over 15 years with special training on children with dyslexia and learning difficulties. He believes that all children should have their eyes examined before starting school and are very happy to see children of any age. If there is a family history of eye problems, please bring them along as young as possible.
We offer all types of contact lenses including regular soft disposable lenses for astigmatism or reading (multi-focal) and more specialised lenses such as Orthokeratology (Ortho-K). Mackey Opticians were Northern Ireland's first Acuvue Centre of Excellence.
Our Donaghadee practice offers the latest Topcon Maestro Mk2 3D-OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomographer) which uses laser scans to detect early macula changes and glaucoma retinal nerve fibre changes that would not be visible through our other tests. It also allows us to measure corneal central thickness and assess Anterior Chamber Angles. Whilst we now offer FREE FUNDUS PHOTOGRAPHY for everyone examined, we strongly recommend regular OCT examination especially of you are diabetic, have a family history of glaucoma or moderate to high shortsightedness.
